Why do all the energy saving light bulbs (fluorescent?) say not to use them with electric timers?

Energy Saving
syuol asked:

It seems like all the energy saving bulbs say on the package never to use with electric timers and I can’t figure why. My sister has used them with timers and it appears they burned out rather quickly. Whats the difference between having a timer turn the light on at a certain time and just flipping the switch?
