How good is cruise control when it comes to saving gas?

When I am driving on the highway, i like to use cruise control for obvious reasons. SO i was wondering, does cruise control actually save on gas or is it about the same?

And… when i am driving at a high rate of speed, and an idiot cuts me off, is it better to hit the breaks or just push the button to turn cruise control off? Does it waste more gas either way?
